Cyprus Research Awards Ceremony 2020


 
The Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) and the Research and Innovation Foundation (IDEK) awarded the top innovations in a bright digital ceremony and honored researchers who stood out for their work.

The awards ceremony took place on December 16th in a hybrid manner at the Municipal Theater of Nicosia in the presence of the winners and awardees only, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The awards were presented by the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr. Kyriakos Kokkinos, the Vice President of the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB), Mr. Dimitris Vakis, and the President of the Foundation for Research and Innovation (Innovative). INNOVATION AWARDS


This year, the OEB Cyprus Innovation Awards complete 14 years of continuous recognition and rewarding of Cypriot companies, organizations and services that innovate. The five winners of this year's Innovation Awards are:

  • Primary Sector: Mellona, ​​for the production of the new natural food products Mellona Honey Spreads with unheated honey as their main ingredient.

  • Manufacturing Sector: Handy Spa, for the innovative methodology for the production of handmade organic soaps.

  • Services Sector: Hellenic Petroleum Cyprus Ltd, for the innovative  mobile phone application "EKO Smile".

  • Public Sector: University of Cyprus, for the development of an Artificial Intelligence system for the forecast of dynamics in the production of electricity from photovoltaics.

  • Social Innovation: Bank of Cyprus Public Company Ltd, for its initiative to create and operate the Support Network #SupportCY.


 





RESEARCH AWARDS

The Cyprus Research Awards were established in 2007 by the Research and Innovation Foundation (IDEK), with the aim of highlighting the work and personality of researchers working in Cyprus. This year's winners of the Cyprus Research Awards are:

  • Distinguished Researcher Award 2020: Dr. Leontios G. Kostrikis, Professor at the University of Cyprus and Founding Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, for his work and contribution to the science and society both locally and and internationally.

  • Young Researcher Award 2020 Thematic Unit "Natural Sciences and Engineering": Dr. Kyriakos Hatzigiannakou, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Physics, University of Cyprus, for his work in Theoretical Nuclear and Particle Physics.

  • Young Researcher Award 2020 Thematic Unit "Life Sciences": Dr. Anastasia Konstantinidou, Academician of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus and Pathologist Oncologist of the Oncology Center of Bank of Cyprus, for her work in Translation Oncology, while she has significant experience in conducting clinical trials for patients with sarcoma and breast cancer.

  • Young Researcher Award 2020 Thematic Unit "Social and Humanities": Dr. Angelos Cassianos, Research Specialist and Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow, Departments of Psychology and Informatics, University of Cyprus, for his work in the advancement of Science and the training of young Health professionals as well as in the improvement of the provision of Health services.
